Cooking & Preparation

Food is only valuable if it is prepared properly. There are a number of foods that can actually be dangerous if not prepared correctly. Below are some ideas on how you can make the most of what you have available to you in preparing nutritious food for your family, especially under emergency conditions.

Conserve - To conserve energy, instead of using heat, which uses energy, thaw food in ambient air for a few hours or in the refrigerator for 24 hours.

Defrost - If you have frozen food that needs to be prepared, let it defrost naturally and don't use extra energy to defrost it.

Foil Dinner - It is pretty simple and even fun to make foil dinners and cook them in an open fire or over charcoal. Click here to learn how to make a Foil Dinner.

Raw Eggs - These can carry the deadly bacteria Salmonella and care must be used in handling, cooking and eating Raw Eggs. Click here for more info on Salmonella.

Raw Meats - There are dangers involved in the preparation of Raw Meats. One danger is to the person who prepares the meats for cooking. Raw Meats can carry the deadly bacteria Salmonella and care must be used to keep all plates, platters, utensil, cutting surfaces and cloths that have had contact with Raw Meats seperate from those that will be in contact with food that is ready to be consumed. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling Raw Meats.

Another danger is to the people who actually eat the Raw Meats. If the food is not cooked thoroughly, it can be a health risk to those who consume it. Click here for more info on Salmonella.
